Dornbirn in its old time. At the beginning of my work, which was about the debate on archive photos, I was questioning myself about the term history. What we already know is that history is build out of memories, facts and photos. The famous psychologist Karl Theodor Jasper says that history is an irreversible process of time. The memories about that irreversible process of time is never clear so that there is enough space for interpretation. Exactly at that point my work Dornbirner Zeitschnitte starts: Diverse photographs of the same lapse of time are tied together. Through the mix between them, visual questions are developed. Dornbirner Zeitschnitte shows exemplary visual solutions for different topics of Dornbirn´s history. Topics are for instance the swinging sixties, daily life scenes or the welfare.

My works are in the size of 50×60 cm and these are collages in my own style.
Words about my works of the art historian Lena Belenkaya in german:

(BELENKAYA, L. 2016)

Multifarious, experimental, special, personally and unreadable…
Those adjectives are characterizing the book I made. The assignment of tasks was to attach texts out of the magazine Miromente with pictures of the photographer Arno Gisinger. The problem was that neither the text nor the pictures had something to do with each other. So I got the idea to design an artistic, experimental book, which shows the photographs on the one side of the book and the text on the other side. Artistic books are multi-lingual, complex and allow an experimental form finding. In fact you can say that the artistic book puts books to the test – through that artistic agility books become a magic place.
The basic idea of this work is to make texts and pictures unreadable through experimental techniques like writing texts out of candle wax or spacing letters too closely. In principle all rules of typography are broken. The form of the book is also experimental: It is a circle. Through that the classic form of books is replaced. It is of course an eye-catcher in every book shelf. To protect the book from dirt it is packaged in a rounded film can.

Opening of a designtheoretical discourse. Since the beginning, alpinism shows an ever-growing positive trend. Through its everlasting actuality it is a relevant topic in the media: Through time, their contribution plays a role in shaping the image of the mountain, the mountain itself as well as the style of alpine climbing.

So far, standard works showed that the topic is viewed by a cultural theoretic, historical, political or technical side, but the clarification of the theme from the designer’s point of view is still missing. With the question of research: How must the relation between mountain and design be, to display a mutual relationship?, I discuss this problem. In coming to terms with this assignment of tasks, I refer to different theories of well-known philosophers and theorists. I should mention Latour’s ANT, Burckhardt’s Promenadologie, Bourdieu’s concept of field, Löw’s Raumsoziologie, Kant’s Critique of the Power of Judgment as well Gumbrecht’s sports-theory, to name a few . On the basis of their theories, all design aspects of alpinism are discussed and substantiated.

This masterthesis Design of alpinism is an attempt to open a new, unprecedented design theoretical discourse and to delve and to amplify said discourse. With the aid of the practical work it will be rendered more precisely and will become more accessible to the target group through a visual essay.
